WORK SCHEDULE: 6:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. (Monday – Thursday), 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. (Saturday), 3:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. (Sunday) on a variable and rotating schedule of 20 hours per week

SALARY: Hourly Rate

REPORTS TO: Library Director | Immediate Supervisor: Coordinator of Access, Instruction, and  Research 

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Library Assistant will perform a broad range of duties to ensure the delivery of quality service to students, faculty, College personnel, and visitors to the library’s information service desk.  The individual will be responsible for the closure of the library at night and the execution of proper procedures to secure the facility.  The Library Assistant complies with the College policies and procedures and those of the Learning Resources Center.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists students, faculty, staff, alumni, and others at the library’s information service desk, by telephone, or via video conference.
  • Charges, discharges, and renews library materials using the integrated library management system (IMLS).
  • Assists students in finding electronic resources using the library’s webpage and online catalog.
  • Assists students, faculty, staff, alumni, and others in the retrieval of library materials from the stacks.
  • Operates computers,  printers, scanners, photocopiers, microfiche/film readers, and other library equipment.
  • Monitors the library to ensure conducive study environment.
  • Assists with the weeding of worn and obsolete library materials.
  • Uses Microsoft Office software in completing work assignments, as required.
  • Assists with management of stacks by sorting and shelving books according to their categorization.
  • Assists with the supervision of College work study students.
  • Answers the telephone and greets visitors
  • Performs other duties as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Associate Degree or higher. 
  • Previous library experience preferred, however, will consider strong public service background. 
  • Basic knowledge of integrated library management systems (ILMS), and working with library resources in print and electronic formats, and other library processes preferred 
  • Knowledge of Library of Congress classification scheme desirable 
  • Clear and effective oral and written communication
  • Ability to establish and maintain a collegial working relationship with library staff, students, faculty, and College personnel. 
  • Possesses the ability to independently perform specialized duties. 
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement.

SKILLS: Basic computer knowledge •Familiarity with video conferencing •Experience with Microsoft Office programs •Willingness to learn new software technology •Good organizational skills  •Ability to multi-task office activities. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to bend, stoop, reach, stand, move from one area to another on a regular basis. •Ability to push book carts and lift up to approximately 45 pounds, if needed.
