JOB TITLE: Animal Care Technician

DIVISION: Academic Affairs                      DEPARTMENT: Biology, Chemistry & Environmental Health Science

SUPERVISOR’S TITLE: Chair of Department of Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Health Science   

BASIC FUNCTIONS:

This position is responsible for the health and welfare of animals housed at Benedict College Animal Care Facility. This job provides technical assistance to various procedures and surgeries on small research animals. The Animal Care Tech assists with quality assurance and quality control functions in support of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Maintain animal records
  • Clean cages and other equipment in animal lab
  • Administer injections and medications in accordance with research guidelines
  • Prepare laboratory samples
  • Monitor health of animals
  • Prepare and provide food and water for animals
  • Sterilize equipment
  • Monitor heating and cooling of animal lab facility
  • Submit reports to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must be able to work under minimum guidance and have good communication skills.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain laboratory records and reports
  • Required to conduct business by adhering to compliance policies and procedures

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or related field with at least one year of related work experience

OR

  • Associate Degree in animal science or veterinary technology and 1-2 years related animal care experience
