Dr. Greene is one of 20 Faculty Members Honored by South Carolina Independent Colleges and University
COLUMBIA, SC – May 6, 2019 – – Benedict College is pleased to announce that Gwenda Richburg Greene has been selected as a 2019 Excellence In Teaching Award recipient. Greene has devoted more than 33 years to academia and has served in various compacities from educator to administrator, research associate and grant writer. She holds a doctorate in educational leadership and policy from Union Institute and University (Cincinnati, OH), Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) English from the University of South Carolina, and a BA in Theatre from Columbia College. She has completed advanced studies at Clemson and New York University (NY).
“I applaud Dr. Greene who has a reputation as a strong collaborator with students across the world,” said Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis, President and CEO of Benedict College. “She is a valued faculty member who combines teaching and research to inspire her students to be the BEST of BC!”
English is Greene’s academic focus. Her scholarly activities include extensive study in critical literacy and the development of educational programs that effectuate voice and power through curriculum and instructional practices. Known as a strong leader, Greene’s leadership roles at Benedict College includes First-Year Experience Chair, Assistant Dean, and Honors Program Director. She is recognized as the founding Director of the nationally acclaimed Service-Learning Program. Publications authored and edited by Greene include a chapter in the book “African Diaspora Literacy: The Heart of Transformation in K-12 Schools and Teacher Education” (Lexington Books, 2018).
Outside the classroom, Greene’s extensive international scholarly activities include work in Cameroon, Central West Africa and research with the Association of Caribbean Studies. She also taught English classes in Ruari, Kenya, East Africa. As a Fulbright-Hays Scholar, Greene served three years in Cameroon and Ghana, West Africa. She will lead a team of Benedict College students in a research, career, and cultural study in Ghana, June 14- 26, 2019.

Each year, SCICU recognizes and celebrates the best of the best with its Excellence in Teaching Awards. A member of the faculty from each of the twenty institutions of higher learning is nominated for the award according to the rigorous guidelines. The award recipients are honored at a special dinner in April and are each awarded a $3,000 professional development grant.
