About Collections

Library journals, magazines, and newspapers consist of publications that are published periodically. Circulating, reserve, reference, and special collection books, are categorized under the Library of Congress classification system. Juvenile and media resources are categorized under the Dewey Decimal classification system. Archival materials are classified by material type and arranged by date.

Journals

  • Available via library webpage.
  • Located on the main and upper levels.
  • Includes all academic disciplines.
  • Alphabetically arranged by titles.
  • Back issues are kept for five years.
  • Journals are limited to library use only.

Newspapers

  • Available via library webpage.
  • Located on the main level.
  • Back issues are kept for four months.
  • Limited to library use only.

Circulating Books (Print)

  • Located on the main level and upper levels.
  • Coverage of undergraduate and graduate programs.
  • Must have BC photo ID to borrow materials.
  • Stacks A through QA 221 are on the main level.
  • Stacks QA 241 through Z are on the upper level.
  • Loan period is 21 days for undergraduates, 28 days for graduate students, and 30 days for faculty and staff.
  • Books may be renewed once, if no request.
  • Overdue books are assessed a fine of 10 cents per day, per book.

Circulating eBooks (Electronic)

  • Available via library webpage.
  • Access to over 300,000 eBooks.
  • Loan period of 21 days.
  • eBooks are accessible 24/7
  • Available from any computer, laptop, iPad, or tablet with internet capability.
  • Coverage of undergraduate and graduate programs.

Reserves

  • Located on the main level at the information service desk.
  • Placed on reserve by professors.
  • BC photo ID is required to borrow materials.
  • Limited to library use only, unless otherwise specified.

Reference (Ref.)

  • Located on the main level behind the information service desk.
  • Coverage of undergraduate and graduate programs.
  • Starting point for initial research.
  • Limited to library use only.

Special Collection (SPEC. C.)

  • Located on the upper level.
  • Works by and about African Americans.
  • Coverage from the early 1800s to the present day.
  • Loan period is 21 days for undergraduates, 28 days for graduate students, and 30 days for faculty and staff.
  • Books may be renewed once, if no request.

Juvenile (Juv.)

  • Located on the upper level.
  • Children’s books
  • Loan period is 21 days for undergraduates, 28 days for graduate students, and 30 days for faculty and staff.

Government Documents (Gov. Doc.)

  • Located on the upper level.
  • Publications from the United States government.
  • SuDoc (Superintendent of Documents) classification system
  • Limited to library use only.

Media Resources

  • Located on the ground level.
  • Audiovisual materials such as CDs, DVDs, and streaming videos.
  • Media resources are limited to library use only for undergraduates.

 

Archives

  • Located on the ground level.
  • A repository of information on the history of Benedict College.
  • Limited to library use only.

 

Microform

  • Located on the ground level.
  • Accessible from the main level.  
  • Newspapers and journals in microfilm and microfiche format.
  • Limited to library use only.
