In February HBCU Times Magazine partnered with Marcus Howard, founder of the 2021 ASCEND HBCU Sports Conference and Career Expo-Super Bowl Event to host a virtual celebration to present Benedict College with the competition’s grand prize.
$15k winnings will be used for new Gaming Innovation Center
Columbia, S.C. – In February HBCU Times Magazine partnered with Marcus Howard, founder of the2021 ASCEND HBCU Sports Conference and Career Expo-Super Bowl Event to host a virtual celebration to present Benedict College with the competition’s grand prize.
With the most students in attendance at the event, Benedict College scored $15,400 worth of CodeBoxx video gaming equipment for their new Gaming Innovation Center.
The prize pack includes:
- PS5 ($800), 4 Controllers ($75 Each), 4K TV ($500), Shipping ($100)
- Xbox Series X ($800), 4 Controllers ($75 Each), 4K TV ($500), Shipping ($100)
- One seat in CodeBoxx’s 16-week technology boot camp, worth $12K
The ASCEND HBCU Esports Conference and Career Expo was held virtually on February 5th during the NFL Super Bowl weekend, making it the first of its kind to be hosted in a blockchain ecosystem.
Present during the announcement was Benedict College President Roslyn Clark Artis; Isiah Reese,CEO and Co-Founder of Blaze Fire Games; Dr. Janeen Witty, Vice President of Academic Affairs; Dr. Paula Shelby, Department Chair of Health Physical Education and Recreation (HPER); Professor Douglas Elliott and Dr. David Staten, CEO and Founder of HBCU Times magazine.
Janea Johnson, a student in Benedict’s HPER program, won a Virtual Coding class – worth $12,000.

The conference enabled HBCU students, faculty, staff, and constituents from across the world to ASCEND – an acronym for Accessing Sources to Catalyze Esports/Gaming Needs & Address Diversity.
