Benedict College 2018 Just Do It! Homecoming Celebration Revives Traditions and Show Off the Best of BC

Comedian and CBS TV Star Sheryl Underwood, Songstress Kelly Price and Case Headline Events

Columbia, SC – Benedict College hosted one of its most star-studded, alumni and student-engaged Homecoming Celebrations in years. As the homecoming activities came to an end, many Tiger Fans like Charles Smalls of Riverdale, Georgia (BC Class of ’96) complained on Facebook that he was having “homecoming withdrawal” and asked President Roslyn Clark Artis for a “do over” this weekend. “Just asking for a few friends!” 

The BC Just Do It 2018 Homecoming theme kicked-off Sunday, October 4 with a Pep Rally entitled Just Kickin It in the HRC Arena followed by the revived traditional Bonfire and Jamboree in the Student Activities Field. A memorable moment was the Morehouse College funeral processional that drew a crowd of 200-300 students and friends.  

On Monday, October 15, a new fitness event featured Just Work It Out! showcasing the Tigers on the Move Zumbathon followed by Just Secure the Crown, the Mister and Miss Homecoming Pageant. Ms. Amber Gillard and Mr. Roderick Haynes secured the crown and were officially introduced to the Benedict College Family during the half-time show at the football game as Mr. and Miss Benedict College Homecoming 2018. Just Ball Out! another new addition was an all-alumni team versus an all-student team basketball game. The alumni took home the trophy and bragging rights. 

The rest of the week was filled with traditional events such as the Carnival, a Fashion Show, an International Cultural Fest, 90’s to the 2000 Throwback Party, a Greek/non-Greek Stroll-Off, a Denim and White Day Party, the Coronations of Mister and Miss Benedict College, Breakfast with BC’s Finest, the Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Banquet, the Alumni Leadership Awards and the State of the College Luncheon, a Career Fair, and Tiger Talk, a panel discussion with alumni of the College about life after graduation. 

On Friday evening, The New BC Family Reunion Block Party brought hundreds of Alumni, student, and their families to Oak street to mix and mingle with old friends. Later that night K-Camp headline the student’s Homecoming Concert while Sheryl Underwood of CBS “The Talk” hosted the Annual Alumni Masquerade Gala with entertainment by the Sunshine Avery, comedian Mike Washington, and the PRIDE Band. 

Homecoming Day began with the President’s Breakfast for Benedict College’s major donors. The Just Smile and Wave Homecoming Parade was led by Dr. Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson, the Immediate Past International President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. who served as the parade’s Grand Marshall. Following the Alumni Tailgating Party where Kris Bruton of the Harlem Globetrotters and Benedict grad could be seen taking pictures with fans –was a hard-fought football game against the Morehouse Tigers whose record was 6-1 versus Benedict’s 5-1 record. The Maroon Tigers were victorious with a score of 14-10. 

Saturday wrapped up with a Concert under stars with R&B songstress Kelly Price and Case in the Charlie W. Johnson Stadium while back on campus Omega Brother Buddie Lewis hosted the Just Step- Step Show. As always, the Benedict Family concluded the Homecoming festivities with the Homecoming Chapel Services entitled Just Worship!
