Author, Inspirational Speaker, and Social Advocate Sybrina Fulton will be the Commencement Speaker at the Benedict College Winter Convocation

The mother of Trayvon Martin dedicates her life to transforming a family tragedy into social change.

Columbia, SC – November 20, 2018, Ms. Sybrina Fulton will deliver the commencement address during the Benedict College Winter Commencement Convocation. The ceremony is set for Saturday, December 15, 2018, at 9 a.m. in the Benjamin E. Mays Human Resources Center Arena.

“Sybrina is a model of grace and strength, said Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis, President and CEO of Benedict College. Because of her passion and dedication ‘we are all Trayvon’ and demand social justice for our sons.”

Fulton established the Trayvon Martin Foundation in 2012, after the tragic loss of her son to senseless gun violence. The legal turmoil that ensued propelled her to become an advocate of social justice. Fulton used her voice to address social injustice, gun violence, and gender profiling. The catalyst for her dream project, the “Circle of Mothers” helped push her to the forefront of the 2016 Democratic National Convention along with a cadre of African- American trailblazing women known as “Mothers of the Movement.”

In 2017, she co-authored with Tracy Martin, Trayvon’s father, Rest In Power, The Trayvon Martin Story, a six-part docuseries, with longtime supporter Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter as executive producer. The Miami native is a graduate of Florida Memorial University and earned a bachelor’s degree in English and communications. She is also the proud mother to son Jahvaris and a member of the Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
