Alumni Spotlight: Carmen Jimenez (c/o 2004)

Today’s Alumni Spotlight is Ms. Carmen Jimenez. Carmen graduated from Benedict with her BSW degree in 2004. She is a professional social worker who epitomizes career flexibility as she currently works as: a Professional Social Worker; Adjunct Professor for the University of South Carolina and Consultant. She is the author of “No No Elizabeth” a resource utilized in her therapy practice, and also leads two non profit organizations “Together We’ll Grow, Inc.” and “Play Therapy with Carmen, Inc.” Most notably, since 2011 Ms. Jimenez has owned her own business, Outspoken Counseling and Consulting. Simply outstanding!

We recently visited with Ms. Jimenez to ask her about keys to success in the classroom and life. What was the best advice you received while a student at Benedict College? “Ms. Hammock (former SW Dept. faculty member) told me to get everything you need to move and shake in the world of Social Work.”

What did you do immediately after graduating from Benedict College?

“I enrolled into the Advanced Standing MSW Program at the University of South Carolina. I earned my MSW degree in 2005.”

What is something that you wished you knew as an undergrad, AND that you wish current undergraduate social work majors knew more about?

“Social work is much more than DSS; it’s not just case management, and you CAN make good money.”

What is one last piece of advice you’d like to share with our students and alumni who may read this feature?

“If there is something you want to do, and you don’t see the job…create it!” “You can make your own path.”

We salute you Ms. Jimenez! Congratulations on your success, and we thank you for being a great role model for future social work professionals.#BestofBC #ProudandPowerful
