Benedict surpasses blood drive goal!!!

September 29, 2006

09/29/2006: When it comes to giving the gift of life, Benedict College students, faculty and staff are ahead of the game. Donating a total of 72 units of blood during the Annual Blood Drive, the institution surpassed its goal of 50 on Thursday, September 28, 2006.

Recognized as a model institution of higher learning for our efforts in increasing blood donation, particularly among the African-American population -- the American Red Cross honored Benedict College with an award on Thursday, September 28, 2006 at its Annual Sickle Cell Anemia Awards Dinner.  High praise was spoken about Benedict and its commitment over the years to helping the American Red Cross raise awareness and recruit donors.

According to statistics from the American Red Cross, blood donation is extremely too low in African-American communities with only 13 percent of African Americans in South Carolina giving blood on a regular basis. Since diseases such as sickle cell are prevalent among African Americans, there is a significant need to raise the level of donations to a little more than 50 percent.

To help overcome the blood shortage, the American Red Cross has asked Benedict to hold another blood drive in the spring 2007.
