From staff reports

DeKalb Neighbor Sports Editor Calleb Obumba recently won a first place award from the Georgia Sports Writers Association.

The award, First Place, Division III, Best Local News Story, was given to Obumba for his article on Marist earning a place on Sports Illustrated's Top 25 list. The award was presented at the association's annual conference in late June.

"This award is a reflection on the hard work and talent Calleb brings to the DeKalb Neighbor. He is an asset to our team and to the readers of the newspaper," said R. Terry Smith, president of the DeKalb Neighbor.

Obumba, a native of Stone Mountain, began with the DeKalb Neighbor as sports editor in April 2005. He is a graduate of Benedict College in Columbia, S.C. where he lettered for three years on the college football team as a defensive back.
