Dr. Ronald High Participates in Historic Vocal Institute

Dr. Ronald H. High (photo), Associate Professor of Music at Benedict College, participated in an inaugural vocal music institute titled “Eastman Sings!” The event took place at the famous Eastman School of Music (University of Rochester), in Rochester, New York, from July 24-July 30, 2005. The presenters were members of the voice faculty at Eastman, who offered topics ranging from “Singing in Russian” to “Body Mapping” and the “Alexander Technique.”  Dr. High was commended on the wealth of experience and knowledge that he displayed in the fields of voice science, pedagogy, history, and performance.

Dr. High describes the experience as “challenging,” “ intense,” and “rewarding.” Being at Eastman held special significance for Dr. High in that two of his former voice teachers attended the Eastman School of Music in the persons of the late legendary baritone William Warfield and soprano Anitra Lynch.  Dr. High presented the Sibley Music Library at Eastman a copy of a recital program in which he accompanied for Warfield in 1985. Dr. High also perused the Josephine Antoine Collection in the Sibley Music Library and located the senior voice recital program of Anitra Lynch who was a pupil of Antoine in the 1940s and 1950s. A special moment for Dr. High was his participation in the culminating concert at the historic Kilbourn Hall, where both Warfield and Lynch performed many times in past years.  Dr. High’s solo, “This Little Light of Mine,” was described as “moving.”

The highlight of Dr. High’s visit to Rochester was his attending a Sunday morning worship service at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church as the guest of Warfield’s two surviving brothers Vernon and Thaddeus. It is noteworthy that Warfield’s father was the pastor of Mt. Vernon from 1947-1966. Dr. High played a piano solo rendition of “Yes, God Is Real” to thunderous response from the congregation.
