Black Entertainment Television’s new reality show, “The Road Show,” debuts today with students from Benedict College.
The show pits male against female students in mental and physical challenges ranging from limbo contests to sports trivia.
The most satisfying aspect of the program for Benedict College, though, isn’t who won the tug-of-war contest but the national exposure the school will get and the on-the-job production training some students gained, a Benedict professor said.
“It was a plum opportunity,” said Linda Quillian, chairwoman of Benedict’s English, Foreign Languages and Communications Department.
About 20 communications majors worked with cast and crew when the show was taping at Benedict last month, serving as interns and production assistants.
“Five of them were approached for other positions at BET,” Quillian said.
Senior communications major Crystal Gordon, 22, said: “The BET crew was great. They answered questions, explained things to us and gave us contact and personal numbers. It was a great opportunity, especially for a small college.”
Jimal Deas, 21, a senior majoring in biology, was glad he participated as a contestant but had some reservations. He competed with one other male against four females in a tug-of-war contest.
“I was embarrassed. I fell,” he said.
Deas took a lot of ribbing from his friends but still plans to tape his segment when it airs.
For competing, Deas said, “I got a T-shirt. I got air time. I had a serious headache. It was hot and noisy.”
Shows taped at Benedict will air all this week on “The Road Show.”
Episodes featuring South Carolina State University in Orangeburg are scheduled to air the week of Oct. 17.
