Mrs. Thomas is a native of Winnsboro, South Carolina. She earned the bachelor of science degree in English education from Barber-Scotia College, Concord, North Carolina, and the Master of education degree with emphasis on English and reading from the University of Texas-El Paso. Additional studies have been done at South Carolina State College, Clemson University, and the University of South Carolina.

Most of her thirty-eight years in public education were spent in Richland County School District One. Other employment was in the Fort Richardson, Alaska Schools and in Midlands Technical College.

Mrs. Thomas volunteered for more than ten years as a tutor and as a literacy tutor trainer in the Laubach Way to Reading with the Greater Columbia Literacy Council. Other volunteer work was done with the Pan Hellenic Council's Literacy/Tutorial Organization Workshops for local churches and for the United Black Fund of the Midlands.

In the University of South Carolina's Social Problems Research Institute: Project Upward Bound she worked in the positions of residence counselor and teacher of reading.

She has participated and/or presented in Newspaper in Education (NIE), Adult Education Reading Workshops and as guest teacher on segments of ETV's "Getting the Message".

Professional organizations include: the National Alliance of Black School Educators, the International Reading Association, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the South Carolina Education Association- Retired, and the Columbia Area Reading Council-Life Member.

Some civic organizations with which she is affiliated include: the Booker T. Washington High School Foundation-charter member; Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated-life member; the National Association of University Women; Laubach Literacy Advance; Greater Columbia Literacy Council, former chair; South Carolina Assault on illiteracy Program, founder and coordinator.

Since establishing a home in Columbia, Mrs. Thomas has been a member of the Saint John Baptist Church, 3404 Beltline Boulevard.
