(April 2 - 3, 2009 in Memphis, TN)

Benedict Tiger Women's Tennis Team ends Regular Season SIAC Conference Matches

The Benedict Tiger Tennis teams wrapped up the regular season, despite some key injuries and made a strong showing to obtain key seedings for the SIAC Spring Sports championships that will be held April 16th in Atlanta, Georgia.

In the opening day of dual match play the teams began Friday morning, the Lady Tigers played four matches and the Men three, as the long tennis day of SIAC Round-Up matches proceeded.

For the Women, against Stillman College, the Tigerettes started with the #1 doubles team of DeAndra Reasonover and Lauren Smith winning at 8-2 and the #2 team, Paola Lopez and Ayana Martin prevailed at 8-1 in pro sets. The third doubles win was gained by default. For the singles in the matches Reasonover, Lopez, Smith, Martin rolled with strong wins to close out the match at 8-0 in finished matches. In match 2, the Tigerettes won 5-2 against LeMoyne-Owens, taking the first two doubles at 8-3 each and but defaulting at #3 doubles because of injuries. The team closed out the match at #1, #3 and #4 singles. DeAndra and Lauren made quick work at 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0 respectively in their matches.  Paola had to steady her play to overcome a first set loss at 2-6 and rally to win the second set at 6-1 and finish the win at 10-4 in the third set tie breaker against Angel Fox of Lemoyne.  The third match set the Tigerettes against the tough lineup of Albany State Univ.  In the doubles fell behind early in losing two of three as Paola Lopez and Ayana Martin fell 8-4 and the #3 doubles match was defaulted by injury. DeAndra Reasonover and Lauren Smith continued their undefeated doubles conference season by rolling to an 8-0 win in their matchup at the #1 position. Down 2-1 after the doubles the team knew they had to win four of the six singles matches in spite of an injury default at #6 singles.  They played strong and accomplished the task at hand as they won at #1, 3, 4, and 5 seeds to gain a 5-4 match win. DeAndra Reasonover and Paola Lopez set the stage with 6-1, 6-1 and 7-5, 6-1 wins. Then strong finishes by Lauren Smith at 6-4, 6-1 and Ayana Martin, 6-2, 6-4 completed the comeback and sealed the match win 5-4 against an always tough Albany State team. The final match of the day for the Women set Clark/Atlanta with two of the top players in the conference against the Benedict Tigers. Benedict stayed in high gear in winning the first three doubles and by receiving wins at #5 and #6 singles by default won the match at 5-0. Reasonover and Smith won a tightly contested match against Tara Turner and Sophia Dawson 8-6 and Paola Lopez and Ayana Martin played steady to win at 8-4. The Lady Tigers ended the day 4-0 in match wins.

Saturdays schedule began with a 5-0 win against Lane College highlighted with Mary Hill winning the pivotal pro set singles match 8-2. The next play set the Tigerettes against Tuskegee University. Reasonover and Smith maintained their streak, winning 8-4 at the #1 doubles position. The team then fell behind 2-1 as Tuskegee came on strong at #2 doubles to win 8-4 and receive the #3 doubles win by injury default. In the singles lineup Ayana Martin pulled out a strong 6-4, 5-7, (10-6) third set tie breaker for the team's only singles victory. Lauren Smith played tough but fell 6-3, 6-3 at #4 and Mary Hill lost at love at #2. Tuskegee gained #6 by injury default and won the match 5-2 while Lopez and Reasonover matches went unfinished. The third match for Saturday set Benedict against Fort Valley State. The Tigerettes began well as Reasnover and Smith stroked to an 8-5 win at #1 doubles. Fort Valley then made a comeback victory at #2 doubles with a win over Lopez and Martin, 9-7 setting up their points as they received defaults at the #3 doubles and #6 singles to go on to a 5-1 win over the Lady Tigers. Late in the evening Benedict had to play a rainout match from the 1st SIAC Round-Up and square off against Clark/Atlanta in a pro set format for another 4 match day. Clark jumped ahead 2-1 in the doubles as Reasonover and Smith lost their first conference doubles match to Turner and Dawson 8-4 and Greene and Canty reworked their strategy to overcome Lopez and Martin at #2 doubles 8-2 in the rematch of the faceoff of the teams in earlier doubles. Then came the singles. The seniors of the squad saw the task at hand as the #2 singles went down to give the opposing team a 3-1 lead in matches. Paola Lopez and Lauren Smith put on their "A "games under pressure at the #3 and #4 positions and came away with 8-0 and 8-3 wins respectively.  Along with a gained forfeit at #6 singles provided by the presence Shani Jones, the Benedict Tigers were lifted to a 5-3 total match victory over Clark.

On Sunday, the final day, two pro-set rainout matches were made up from the earlier roundup. The tigerettes faced LeMoyne-Owens. The team was able to take all three doubles and with Mary Hill winning at 8-1 at #5 singles and with the presence of Shani Jones at #6, Benedict registered a 5-0 victory. In the final match of the weekend the Tigerettes closed out with a 5-0 win over Stillman College winning all three doubles at 8-0 and two singles. The Benedict Tigers Women's team completed the weekend at 8-2 and improving from their 1-3 weekend of the first roundup. Their efforts place them in third place in the brackets for the SIAC Spring Sports Championships, April 16th 2009.
