Men's Tennis Team survives in the 2nd SIAC Round-Up on April 3rd thru 5th 2009
Benedict Men's Tennis pulls 4th Place for good opening round match-up in SIAC Championship Tennis tournament.
The Tigers started weekend with a win over Le Moyne-Owens College. Avery Coins won at #1 singles 6-3, 6-3 and Jason Calloo prevailed over Jihad Sharif 7-6(7-2), 7-5. Edward Cox and Gene Utsey won at #2 doubles 8-4 and Avery Coins and Jason Calloo won at #1 doubles 8-2 to set a 5-0 victory. At 11:00 the Tigers took on Stillman College. Coins and Calloo took the first doubles 8-0 and the team of Kenny Bovain and Devongelo Crawford won at #3 doubles 8-4. Cox and Utsey fell short 8-6 at #2. In singles Avery Coins and Jason Calloo won at #1 and #2 doubles 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-0 respectively to put up the points. Kenny Bovain closed the match out with a 6-2, 7-5 win at #4 singles for a 6-0 Benedict Tiger win. The team next faced a strong Morehouse College team. Morehouse took the first three doubles, 8-3, 8-1 and 8-0. Edward Cox and Kenny Bovain came up short at #3 and 4 singles as the Atlanta squad took the win at 5-0.
Saturday's matches started with a win at Lane College as they gained victories in all three of the doubles and two singles for a 5-0 victory. In the second match Benedict matched against Tuskegee Institute. Edward Cox and Gene Utsey won at #3 doubles 9-8(7-5), but Tuskegee took the #1and #2 doubles at 8-3 and 8-1. The defending champs powered through the singles as Coins, Calloo and Bovain loss in straight sets. Fort Valley was the final match of the day. Coins and Calloo lost a close match at #3 doubles 9-8(7-4). Cox and Utsey and the team of Bovain and Crawford also lost in the opening doubles. Crawford, Cox and Bovain came up short in the singles as the Tigers fell 5-0.
On Sunday, makeup matches from the 1st Roundup was played. The Tigers won against Le Owens 5-0. Coins and Calloo took the #1 doubles 8-6 and the teams of Edward Cox and Gene Utsey and Kenny Bovain and Devongelo Crawford powered through to 8-2 and 8-2 wins to wrap up the match. The Tigers closed out the round-up with a 5-0 win over Stillman College. Benedict's Men's Tennis Team ended the weekend at 5-3.
