November 2, 2008
The Benedict Tiger men and women tennis teams played their second scrimmage match against Spartanburg Methodist Junior College November 2nd at the Columbia Tennis Center. In a rotation of players the match play proved to be good preparation for the squads.
In singles for the women, DeAndra Reasonover, at the #1 position cruised to 6-0, 6-0 win over Margaret Daugherty and at #2 Paola Lopez played a close match but came out on top in two sets, 6-4, 7-6(7-3). In doubles, at #1 the team of Reasonover and Smith defeated Daugherty and Swain, 8-6. Lopez and Martin fell short at 9-8 in a pro set tie breaker.
For the men, Avery Coins, the returning SIAC, MVP and Freshman of the Year, came away with a strong win at #2 singles 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 over Christian Adamo and Jason Calloo lost a tough two setter to Christian Ranguelou, a top player from Brazil 6-2, 6-3. Edward Cox played well in a lost at #3. Newcomers Ryan Squirrewell, Dominique Green and Nicolas Hudley battled in losing matches but played well and got involved in good on-court experience showing the work needed ahead. The doubles highlight was at #1 doubles where Coins and Calloo were edged in a tight pro set 8-5 as they matched up together for the first time.
Overall lacking practice facilities worked against the squads but the daily time in conditioning and match play will help this team prepare for the official spring season. On a recruiting note, two men and two women, each top recruits from Zimbabwe and Colombia, SA will join the respective teams in January for the start of the spring season. Two red shirt men will also be available as the new season begins.
