For more than three decades Mary Louise Davis has exerted positive influences
as a Benedict College athlete, teacher, coach and administrator. Her
record of distinguished service is legendary.
Davis, who starred in softball and volleyball as a student, graduated
in 1972 and joined the Benedict staff in 1973 after earning a Masters
of Science in Physical Education at Indiana University. She has played
a major role in helping to build women’s and men’s sports at her alma
Mary’s athletic career includes: Women’s Intramural and Extramural Coordinator,
1973 to 1974; Director of Student Activities and instructor of physical
education, 1974 to present; Women’s Athletic Director, 1973 to 1986;
Coach of Women’s Basketball, Softball and Volleyball, 1973 to 1981; Coach
of Men’s Tennis, 1981 to 1988; Acting Athletic Director, 1983; Assistant
Athletic Director, 1986 to 1988; and Athletic Director, 1988 to 1990.
Davis received national news coverage when the Southern Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference selected her as “Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year”
in 1986 and 1988, and upon being appointed Director of Athletics at Benedict
College – the first woman to hold the post in the SIAC.
She is highly regarded by students and alumni for her love of Benedict
traditions. For years she has re-energized that “OI” BC Spirit” by providing
leadership in planning and presenting outstanding Homecoming, Coronations,
and Spring Festival activities.
In addition to assisting other Benedict constituents with their programs,
in her role as Director of Student Activities, Mary Davis oversees more
than 50 campus organizations, including the Student Government Association
and Greek-Letter societies.
