Football, Track 1963-66

Dr. James Carter is an Exhibit A of the type of scholar/athletic produced by Benedict College. His stellar performance on the football field as one of the best linemen ever to wear a Tiger uniform was not out of harmony with his outstanding work in the classroom.

A tough and gutsy guard on Benedict teams from 1963 to 1966, the Savannah, Georgia native was a four-year starter and two-time All-Conference nominee. He used lessons learned as a member of the Tiger track team to excel in football. On defense, he didn't just move toward the ball carrier, he accelerated with speed and finesse. He had great second effort, often racing from one side of the field to make a tackle on the other side. He became prototype by which other linemen were measured.

Since graduating from Benedict, Carter has worked as an educator and coach in the Durham, North Carolina public schools and at North Carolina Central University. Along the way he earned his master's and doctorate degrees. Currently, he is principal of Durham High School.
