BC vs. MC (Miles College)

09/12/2009: The Benedict College Tigers are back to the grid iron defending home turf against the Golden Bears of Miles College. The Tigers snatched their second consecutive win after dominating West Virginia State University in the Palmetto Capital City Classic 49-21 the previous week.

With the explosiveness of the option offense, the Tigers roared out of the gate, marching downfield 100 yards in 6 plays for the first score of the game. QB Pat Riley rushed into the end zone putting the Tigers ahead 7-0 with 10:58 to go in the 1st quarter. Miles would answer back with 5:25 to play in the first, capping off a 10 play, 52 yard drive with a 10 yard touchdown reception. A botched PAT would set the score at BC 7 – MC 6. Capitalizing on a collapse in the Benedict secondary, QB Carlton Hill would find a wide open Miles receiver camped in the end zone adding to their lead with 1:00 to go in the 1st. An unsuccessful two point conversion would set the score at BC 7 – MC 12 to close out the 1st.

In an attempt to wear down the Miles defense, Benedict would use a versatile mix of passing and option football to march to the Miles 30 yd line. From there, Kicker Alper Keskin would split the uprights setting the score at BC 10 – MC 12 with 13:13 left in the 2nd quarter. After forcing a turnover on the ensuing drive, Benedict would make a round trip to the Miles end zone. Running Back Renando Rose burst through the Miles defensive line with 9:23 left in the half to put Benedict ahead 17-12.  A huge interception by Strong Safety Marquez Gibson would get Benedict the ball just before the end of the half. Capitalizing on the turn over QB Pat Riley would breach the end zone with 1:28 to go in the half extending Benedict's lead to 23-12. Miles would not end the half quietly finding the end zone with just 13.2 seconds left in the 2nd quarter. A successful 2 point conversion ended the half at BC 23 – MC 20.

With Miles nipping at their heels, Benedict would attempt to pull away on a 26 yard field goal from Kicker Alper Keskin with 10:58 to go in the 3rd quarter. Piling on the points, Benedict would return to the Miles end zone later in the quarter carried by Renando Rose. Rose pounded through the Miles defensive line to extend Benedict's lead to 33-20. With its first score of the half, Miles shortened the gap to BC 33 – MC 23 on a 37 yd. field goal with 4:21 left in the 3rd. With the option rolling and well timed air attacks, Benedict would find the end zone yet again on 10 play 44 yard drive. QB Pat Riley connected with WR Corey Gardhigh in the corner of the end zone to put the Tigers ahead 40 – 23 with 11:10 to go in the 4th. In a final attempt to even the score, Miles would drive downfield 68 yards on 8 plays into the end zone. The final score would stand at BC 40 – MC 31.

Your Benedict College Tigers will be back in action next Saturday squaring off with Concordia College in the annual Miami City Classic in Miami, Fla.
