Tiger's SWAT #6 Ranked WVSU Yellow Jackets

On a great mid-day afternoon the weather could not have been more perfect for the Eighth Annual Palmetto Capital City Classic. Packed with fever pitched crowd of over 16,000 fans in and around Benedict College's Charlie W. Johnson football stadium, the # 6 ranked Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State University and the Tiger's of Benedict College were eager to hit the gridiron.

 In the 1st quarter of play Benedict quarterback and past High School All-American, Pat Riley scored on a 45-yard quarterback keeper. All-SIAC Place Kicker Apler Keskin connected on the extra point to give BC a 7-0 lead. On West Virginia State's next possession, Jermain King caught a 30 yard pass from Kevin O'Brian during a 7 play 81 yard drive with 6:39 left in the quarter. Patrick Ryan kicked the extra point for WVSU to even the score at 7-7. After the ensuing kick-off return the Tiger's would put together a 7 play, 77 yard drive late in the first quarter. At the 3:00 minute mark, Running Back Renando Rose scored on a one yard touchdown run for the Tiger's, Keskin made the extra point.  (14-7 BC).

Not to be out done with 14:11 on the clock at the top of the second quarter, WVSU Kevin O'Brian connects on a 20 yard pass to King again  for a Yellow Jacket second score on a 9 plays, 69 yard drive even the at 14BC-14WVSU. Ryan makes the extra point. On the next possession BC would come back on a quick 8 play, 71 yard scoring touchdown run by full back Maxamillion Martin on the 2 yard line. Keskin was 3 for 3 in extra point attempts so far to put the Tigers in the lead 21 BC-14 WVSU. WVSU O'Brien completed an a 11 yard touchdown pass to Landon Johnson on 12 plays, 75 yard scoring drive to pull at 21 BC-21WVSU. Ryans PAT kick was good. Just before the end of the half the Tiger's Renando Rose scores again with 7 plays, a 68 yard drive and scored from 3 yards out. Keskin would go 4 for 4 before the half in extra points scored as BC puts some distance between them and the Yellow Jackets (28 BC- 21 WV). West Virginia State would not score again in the second half which put the Tigers in the driver's seat for the rest of the game.

bc  football team  vs west virginia state univ pat rileyLate in the 3rd quarter Pat Riley scored on a16 yard touchdown run on an 8 play, 85 yard drive by the Tiger offensive line. Keskin kicked the extra point and BC took a commanding lead 35 BC – 21 WVSU. In the top of the 4th  quarter BC's Martin rushed for his second touchdown of the game from one yard out and gave the Tigers a three touchdown lead 42 BC - 21WVSU. After Tiger Line Backer James Graham sacked of O'Brien, forcing a fumble BC would than score for the last time on a 34 yard pass from Riley to Wide Receiver Kareem Dunlap for 34 yards, 49 BC – 21 WVSU. Keskin was 7 for 7 on the day. This will be the first game this year the Tigers complied more than 100 yards passing and three hundred yards rushing.

The Tigers are on an eight game winning streak in the Palmetto Capital City Classic. Quarterback Pat Riley was named The Dr. Leroy Walker Player of the Game. Next week Benedict will play Miles College at 6:00pm September 12, 2009 at home.
