Morehouse over Benedict 34 – 13
"Four turnovers help Morehouse to its first win of 2009"
[Atlanta, GA] Trying to improve on a stormy break down in Columbia, SC during last weekend's game against Tuskegee, the Benedict College Tiger's would make a determined effort to get back to five hundred in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. In 2008 the BC Tigers defense held steady at home against Morehouse College (MHC) in a 13-10 victory.
Late in the 1st quarter Morehouse would get on the score board first on a one yard run by David Carter. The PAT by Morehouse Ian Mullen was good for a 7 – 0 Morehouse lead. Benedict gave greats signs of life by running the ball right at the heart of the Morehouse defense, however could not break into the MHC red zone. Penalties and missed quos on the line would hurt the Tiger offense.
Early in the 2nd quarter Morehouse struck again with an interception resulting to a four yard pass from William Brack to Achiile Hendje for their second score of the half. After the extra point by Mullen, Morehouse would take commanding lead of 14 – 0 with 10:45 left before half time. Benedict continued to mix it up on offense by passing and rushing but too many turnovers once again hurt the Tigers in the red zone.
After half time in the top of the 3rd Morehouse would score again off another Benedict offensive turnover with a 39 yard field goal by Ian Mullen with 11:55 left on the clock (MHC 17 BC 0). BC would mount a come back of its own with a 36 yard touch down run by Quarterback Robert Rowe on a 7 play, 68 yard scoring drive with 5:58 to go in the 3rd (MHC 17 BC 7). Morehouse scored for a second time in the 3rd on a 27 yard field goal by Mullen pushing the score deficit to all most 2 touch downs (MHC 20 BC 7).
In the 4th and final quarter Morehouse scored twice in the last in the last five minutes of the game. Morehouse's Brack scored on a four yard romp to the end zone and the PAT by Mullen was good (MHC 27 BC 7). The Maroon Tiger's scored on defense as well as on a 25 yard pass interception by Charlie Wilson and the PAT was successful by Mullen pushing the MHC score up by more than 3 touch downs (MHC 34 BC 7). Benedict tried to keep the fight alive on a one yard touchdown run by Maxamillion Martin. Benedict then went for the two point conversion and they would be shut out on an incomplete pass by Rowe (MHC 34 BC 13).
The next game for Benedict College will in held Columbia, SC where Benedict College will host West Virginia State University in the 8th Annual Palmetto Capital City Classic. Game time will be 4:00pm EST.
