BC vs. TU (Tuskegee University)

[Columbia, SC] The Benedict College Tigers are back to the grid iron defending home turf against the Golden Tigers of Tuskegee University. In his third season at Benedict College, Head Coach Stan Conner looks to continue a steadily improving record into 2009.

In first quarter action the Golden Tigers of Tuskegee would jump out to an early lead scoring the first drive of the game 3:58 in. The score came on a goal line rush capping off a 10 play, 49 yard drive to put Tuskegee ahead 7-0. Benedict would immediately answer back when RB Bruce Toval breached the end zone completing a 10 play, 65 yard drive. Time would wind down in the first quarter with a score of Benedict 7-Tuskegee 7.

Tuskegee would pull ahead with12:47 to go in the second quarter on a 3 play 40 yard drive. A blocked extra point attempt settled the score at TU 13 – BC 7. The Golden Tigers added to their lead with 5:52 left in the half on 2 yd rush into the end zone. The 11 play, 76 yd. drive settled the score at TU 20-BC 7 to close out the half.

A 1 hour and 20 minute delay due to weather conditions would not allow the second half to begin until 9:00pm ET. The delay did not deter the Golden Tigers who would extend their lead with 3:50 to go in the 3rd rushing into the end zone setting the score at TU 27-BC 7. Defense would dominate the 4th quarter with neither team reaching the end zone resulting in a 27-7 home opening loss for the Benedict College Tigers.

QB Pat Riley finished the game with 46 yards rushing, completing 7 of 16 passes for 67 yards. WR Jonathan Cunningham led receiving with 3 catches for 38 yards. Michael Thomas and James Graham led the Tiger defense with 9 tackles each.

The Benedict College grid iron squad will be back in action Saturday August 29th at Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA.
