Benedict College vs. Clark Atlanta University
11/01/2007: In Augusta, the Garden City of Georgia, the Tigers of Benedict College hosted the Panthers of Clark Atlanta University in the 15th Annual CSRA Classic. The Tigers entered the contest with a record of 1-7 and 0-5 in the SIAC.
After an opening 15-yard kick off return by Verna Nesmith, on the second down of the series the Tiger offense turned the pigskin over by throwing an interception made by defensive back Paul Jackson and allowing the Panther defense to score on the turnover. Clark Atlanta took the lead with only 1 minute passing in the in the game. After a successful extra point kick the Panthers made the score 7-0.
The Tiger's would eventually answer back late in the 1st quarter with a 1-yard run by quarterback Kevin Reese. Joshua Lailson's kick was good. At the end of the 1st quarter Benedict out-rushed Clark by 85 yards.
During the 2nd half the Tigers came roaring back on the grid-iron scoring a touchdown on another 35 yard-run by Kevin Reese. The touchdown was scored with 13:25 on the clock. Lailson's kick was good which advanced the score to 7-14. The Panthers quickly responded with 9:43 on the clock with a 35 yard field goal. At the end of the 2nd half the tigers would keep the lead 10-14.
The only points scored in the 3rd quarter would come from an 18-yard touchdown pass from Corey Jones for the Panthers. The Panthers would take the lead for the first time in the game at 17-14. The 3 point lead over the Tigers would hold though out the 4th quarter allowing the Clark Atlanta Panthers to come away with the win. The win would extend the Panthers to 3-6 and 2-3 in the SIAC. BC remains with 0 wins in the SIAC at (0-6) and 1-8 overall. Curtis Johnson, a defensive end for Clark Atlanta University was named the Most Valuable Player of the Game. Johnson had 13 tackles, 1 forced fumble and 2 tackles for a loss. The Tigers will face-off next week against the Lane College Dragons of Jackson, TN on Saturday November 3, 2007 at 2:00 pm in the Charlie W. Johnson Stadium in Columbia.
