BC vs. MHC (Morehouse College)
08/25/2007: Newly hired head football coach Stan Conner led a new and improved Tiger gridiron squad into Morehouse College this past Saturday for the 2007 season opener. With starting quarterback Omar Love at the helm and an almost entirely new starting roster the Tigers appeared locked and loaded for a great start to a successful season.
The Tigers came roaring out of the gate when Senior RB Elijah Clark returned the opening kickoff 40 yards to the MHC 49. Unfortunately, the opening drive would result in an interception with 12:49 left in the first quarter on the MHC 40 yd. line. The Maroon Tigers would reach the scoreboard first on a 13 yard run from Kelvin Moore with1:52 left in the 2nd quarter. However, Benedict would strike back with a 46 yard TD pass from Love to Jonathan Cunningham. Senior Carl Spellman would pound into the end zone for the 2 point conversion giving BC the lead 8-7. Morehouse would close out the 2nd quarter with a 36 yard field goal with 0 time left on the clock and Senior QB, Markus Webb took over the offense for Benedict College shortly into the third quarter. Morehouse would widen the gap to 17-8 at the 14:17 mark in the third quarter with a 33 yd TD pass. As time winded down, Benedict showed some life with 9:54 left in the 4th quarter when Cunningham broke loose for a 20 yard TD rush. A failed extra point attempt would set the score at BC 14-MHC 17. Morehouse would deliver the final blow with 7:08 left in the fourth quarter on an 18 yd. TD pass. Defensively, DB David smith led the way with an astonishing14 tackles. Carl Spellman also added 7 tackles of his own in the defensive effort. The Benedict College Tigers endured their first loss of the season with a final score of BC 14-MHC 23.
The Benedict College Tigers will take the field again Saturday Sept. 1st at 3:00 p.m. for the Sixth Annual Palmetto Capital City Classic against Livingstone College at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium.
