BC vs. SSU at Palmetto Capital City Classic
This years 5th Annual Palmetto Capital City Classic proved that real tiger stripes are purple and gold as the Tigers of Benedict College (BC) mauled the Savannah State University (SSU) Tigers in a 21-7 victory at Williams Brice Stadium.
Benedict would pounce on Savannah State right out of the gate when sophomore Richard Siders (photo) returned the opening kickoff for 59 yards. The opening drive would result in an 8-yard touchdown rush by junior TB Elijah Clark (photo). Benedict College would continue to pile on the points at the 11:41 mark in the second quarter when sophomore QB Antonio Gaffney (photo) launched a 42 yard touchdown pass to Siders. With 3 minutes and 40 seconds left in the second quarter the situation was 4th and 12 on the SSU 36. BC Coach John Hendricks would call a fake punt that was executed to perfection for a 25-yard pass completion from Richard Siders to Jeffery Nobles (photo) to keep the drive alive. Benedict would strike once more on a 1-yard touchdown run by Jeffery Nobles to end the half at BC 21- SSU 0.
Savannah State was able to hold off Benedicts offensive onslaught for the rest of the game but failed to score any points of their own until the 11:55 mark in the fourth quarter. Savannah State QB Garrett Williams connected on a 5-yard pass completion for their only score of the game.
Junior TB Elijah Clark led Benedicts offense gaining 107 yards on 11 carries with 1 touchdown. Averaging 9.5 yards per carry, he was also the recipient of the Robert “Jett” Johnson award for offensive player of the game. Senior TB Jeffery Nobles also rushed for 53 yards on 13 carries with 1 touchdown. Sophomore QB Antonio Gaffney had 4 completions on 10 attempts for 85 yards. Junior MLB and recipient of the Robert “Jett” Johnson award for defensive player of the game, Deon Lanier (photo), had was also a defensive force for Benedict with 12 tackles and 6 of which were solo. Senior LB Titus Curry (photo), recorded 7 tackles, 2 assists, and 1 sack for Benedict.
The Tigers of Benedict College will be back in action Saturday, September 9th at Clark Atlanta University at 7 p.m.
