Maroon Tigers squeeze passed BC in season opener

In the season opener at Bolden Stadium, the Tigers fell just short of a W, in a 25-24 loss to Morehouse College (MHC). With just 3 minutes and 12 seconds into the first quarter Morehouse struck first with a 6 yard touch down run, and successful PAT, to put the Maroon tigers ahead by seven. Morehouse’s early lead would prove to be short-lived due to a 3 yard touchdown run by junior tailback Elijah Clark (photo) with 5 minutes left in the first quarter. Benedict would take the lead with ten seconds left in the first on a 30 yard field goal by junior kicker, Martin Degazon (photo). The score would stand at MHC 7-BC 10, until the 10:55 mark in  the second quarter when Morehouse quarterback Carlos King breached the end zone on a one yard QB keeper. A botched extra point attempt would halt the score at MHC 13-BC 10. However, the mighty purple and gold would prove calm under pressure as they recaptured the lead with 4:56 before halftime when quarterback Antonio Gaffney (photo) pounded through the Morehouse defensive line on a 1 yard goal line rush. The score would stand at MHC 13-BC 17.

The third quarter went scoreless, until Maroon Tiger tailback Eddie Rowe exploded right through the gut of the Benedict defense for a 54 yard touchdown run. The score would remain MHC 19-BC 17 after a second failed extra point attempt. Tension was high entering the fourth quarter where three crucial plays would determine the games outcome. The first of which was a beautiful pass from Antonio Gaffney over the  top of the Morehouse defense which fell perfectly into the hands of receiver Britain Thompson (photo). While in one-on-one coverage Gaffney connected for a 37 yard score. Morehouse would initiate its own air attack when a miscommunication in the Tiger secondary allowed for an easy 26 yard touchdown pass with 11:13 to go. With the score at MHC 25- BC 24, the benedict offense would take the field for its final drive from their own 45 yard line. Benedict would fight its way to the Morehouse 15. On third and five QB Antonio Gaffney would drop back only to be hounded by maroon jerseys, in the scramble the ball was lofted downfield only to be picked off by linebacker Scorpio Brown ending the game at 25-24 Morehouse College.

The Benedict College offense was led by Quarterback Antonio Gaffney who completed 6 of 12 passes for 120 yards with 1 interception. Elijah Clark led the ground attack with 14 carries for 92 yards. Senior tailback Jeffery Nobles (photo) also rushed for 29 yards on 6 carries. Wide Receiver Britain Thompson had 2 receptions for 58 yards. Charles Shippy (photo) led the Tiger defense with 9 tackles aided by David Smith (photo) and Deon Lanier (photo) who each had 8 a piece.
