On Homecoming week of the 1999 Tiger Football Season, a number of former athletes and alumni met with Dr. LeRoy Walker to get his expertise in forming a Booster Club with College approval.
We followed his advice and met as a group the next night at the Embassy Suites Hotel. In attendance were Mr. Robert Sorrell; Mr. James Johnson; Mr. Jimmy Greene; Mr. Charles Benson; Mr. Ben Wesley; Mr. John Brown; Mr. Bobby Treadwell; Mr. Ed Gates; Mr. George Harold; Mr. Freeman Williams; Mr. Rufus Sanders; Mr. Elias Kibler; Mr. Robert O'Neal; Mr. Richard Reed; Mr. Billy Roach; Mr. Robert Taylor, Jr.; Mr. Jerome Dickerson; Mr. Bob McCullough; Mr. Wilson Walker; and Coach Ben Trapp.
The group elected officers, and the following members were elected; Mr. Bob Sorrell (President); Mr. Ben Wesley (Vice President); Mr. Jimmy Greene (Secretary); Mr. James Johnson (Correspondence Secretary); Mr. John Brown (Treasurer); Mr. Bobby Treadwell (Sergeant of Arms); Mr. George A. Harold (Chaplain); and Mr. Charles Benson (Business Manager).
The Officers of the club met at the home of Mr. James (Clue) Johnson in Camp Spring, Maryland on February 26, 2000, to write By-Laws, and discuss other concerns of the club. In attendance were Mr. Richard Reed (New York); Mr. Elias Kibler (District of Columbia); Mr. Bob Sorrell (Philadelphia); Mr. Bobby Treadwell (Atlanta); Mr. Jimmy Greene (Atlanta); Mr. Charles Benson (South Carolina); and Mr. James Johnson (Maryland); Mr. K. D. Range; and Mr. Marion Nickolson both from Maryland, former football players at Benedict stopped by to give their support.
An Organization meeting was held at the Radisson River Walk Hotel in Augusta, GA on February 24, 2001. At this meeting the newly elected President, Mr. Bob Sorrell, reviewed the vision, mission and role of the Benedict Booster Club.
Committees were formed to finalize the By-laws, fundraising, and compliance with federal, state and NCAA guidelines.
Mrs. Barbara C. Moore, Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Dr. David H. Swinton, President and the College, were pleased with our desire to support Benedict College, and sanctioned the formation of a Booster Club. Mrs. Moore explained the responsibility of the College to comply with Federal, State and NCAA regulations in this endeavor and agreed to work with us in setting up guidelines and procedures to make sure we comply with all appropriate regulations including IRS regulations. |
