Tigerettes squeeze passed Clark Atlanta Lady Panthers
01/10/2007: The Benedict College Tigerettes pulled out a
barn burner victory Monday evening over the visiting Clark Atlanta Panthers in
overtime action. The Tigerettes pulled out on an early 13 point lead, but a
lack of defense and rebounding left the door wide open for the Panthers who
eliminated that deficit by halftime, evening the score at 24-24. Clark would start the half with 2 consecutive before Benedict would answer with spirit lifting
three-pointer from Junior Keisha Braxton. Midway through the second half Clark
Atlanta would lead Benedict 40-34. With 1.8 seconds left in regulation the
Tigerettes would find themselves down 47-45 with junior guard Nekeechia
Davis on the line shooting two. She would miss both, but senior guard Lutesia
Davis would come up with a huge rebound and put back to send the game into
overtime.
In overtime action it all came down to who
wanted it more. With both teams exhausted and fouling out some key players, the
game intensity had hit its peak. Every loose ball was a battle in itself, and
the Tigerettes had won the war by a score of 66-61. Overtime play was
highlighted by outstanding play from senior guard Nakia Baker. Baker
finished the game with 6 points, 1 block, and 1 assist. Tigerette inside force Christy
Yusef dominated regulation before fouling out late in the second half.
Yusef totaled 14 points and 8 blocks in the Tigerette win. The biggest story of
the evening would be of an exceptional offensive clinic, courtesy of senior
forward Valerie McQueen who led Benedict in scoring with 21 points.
McQueen also recorded 2 assists, 1 block, and 2 steals.
The Tigerettes will be back in action hosting Lane College Saturday January 13th at 6pm.
