2010 SIAC Basketball Tournament

March 4, 2010

[Atlanta, GA] Head Coach Fred Watson and the Benedict College Tigers returned to a packed house at Frank Forbes Arena after watching the Lady Tigers route Clark Atlanta in the quarter finals of the SIAC Tournament. As the Tigers took the court the adrenalin filled the arena.

Albany State quickly answered back with a three-pointer for their first points of the game. More than halfway through the first half both teams only had a total of 3 fouls committed. The Tigers continued to play a game of speed and finesse inside the paint.  Steve Horton led the offensive attack by sinking a flurry of jumpers from the top of the key.

During the final few minutes of the half, the Benedict Tigers boasted a 13 point lead over the Golden Rams of Albany State University (33-20). Horton scored a total of 14 points before the end of the half and Trevor Eichelberger followed close behind sinking 11 points. Eichelberger also accounted for two steals during the half. Freshman Guard Anton Greer picked up the defensive game grabbing 6 rebounds. At the end of the half, the BC Tigers led the Golden Rams 37-29.

In the second half, the Golden Rams came out full force knocking down two three pointers within the first minute of the half. The Rams continued on and tied the game up (37-37) with 17:58 on the clock. Missed shots and sloppy possessions would plague both teams during the second half. With 15:00 minutes on the clock, Benedict only scored 4 more points while Albany didn't skim the net once.

The Tigers eventually started gaining more ground after a plethora of fouls committed by Albany State. With 12:00 minutes on the clock, the Tigers led the game 46-40. Sean Glenn of Albany State slowed the process for Benedict hitting the next five points for Albany and weakening the lead to 45- 50. With 3:00 minutes on the clock, both teams were still plagued with sloppy ball handling.  However, too much Horton from behind the arches would allow Benedict to break away with a four point lead (61-57).

With 1:23 on the clock. Benedict would regain possession of the ball but a shot clock violation would put the ball back in Albany possession. O'neal Truett of Albany state forced a foul but missed one of the foul shots to place the score at 61-59 Benedict with :34.9 on the clock. Freshman guard Cassius Bell made a lay-up with :20 seconds on the clock to lift the Tigers a head four points. Glenn of Albany State would answer back again with a last minute three-pointer, however it wouldn't be enough to shake Watson's BC Tigers. Final score of the game was Benedict 67, Albany State University 65. The Tigers will advance to the Semi-Final round of the SIAC Tournament and tip-off against Tuskegee University on Friday, March 5, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. in Atlanta, GA.
