Benedict vs. Morehouse
01/10/2007: The Tigers of Benedict College (BC)
took on the Morehouse College (MHC) Maroon Tigers in SIAC conference play. Morehouse
would dominate play from the opening tip scoring 5 consecutive points before Benedict
would answer 4 minutes into play. Both teams struggled on the offense due to
aggressive man-to-man defense from both teams. Midway through the first half a fast
break style of play took over the game with both teams trading basket for
basket. At this point, sophomore forward Bennie Lewis would begin a
scoring streak of his own, scoring a momentum shifting transition three pointer
to set the score at BC 23- MHC 26. Lewis would finish the game with 13 points,
netting 3 of 4 attempts from 3 pt. range, 2 rebounds, all in just 7 minutes of
playing time. The Morehouse size advantage showed as Morehouse capitalized on
second chance opportunities to keep them ahead going into the half 39-35.
In second half action Benedict College would immediately take the lead on a 6 point scoring run to set the tone for the rest
of the game. Morehouse would not see the lead again thanks to commendable team
play and hustle from the Tigers. Senior Leslie Brown, led by example
jumping passing lanes earning 3 steals, hitting the deck for loose balls,
scoring 13 points, dishing out 5 assists, and pulling down 8 rebounds. Benedict
would outlast Morehouse on its way to an 81-69 home court victory.
A balanced scoring attack led the Benedict
offense with notable performances from two other Tigers. Junior Guard Lamont
Robinson tallied 13 points, 5 assists, and 1 steal. Sophomore Zachary
Baron contributed 13 points, 13 rebounds, 1 block, and 1 steal, to the
Tiger win.
Benedict will defend their undefeated conference
record Monday January 8th against visiting Clark Atlanta, Game time
is 8 pm.
