Derrick Johnson will be entering his second year as the Sports Information Director (SID) at Benedict College. As SID, Johnson is responsible for building relationships with the media and coordinating coverage plus statistical data. Johnson is also responsible for all editorial work for Benedict’s sports publications.
Over the past year, Johnson has worked extremely hard for publicity of Benedict College Athletics through all media outlets in the state of South Carolina. This past spring, Johnson played a role when the Southern Intercollegiate Conference (SIAC) granted Benedict College and the city of Columbia a bid to host the SIAC spring sports championships, which consisted of baseball, softball, tennis and track and field.
Johnson was promoted as SID, after serving as the Assistant Director of Public Relations at Benedict College for three years. Prior to his service at Benedict, the seasoned publicist began his career as a Public Relations Coordinator for the S.C. State Housing Finance and Development Authority. In addition, Johnson was an assistant for the Director of Sports Information in the development and planning of special promotions and events at USC-Aiken.
Johnson is a member of several professional and civic organizations, among them the College Sports Information Directors of America (COSIDA), Black College Sports Information Directors Association (BCSIDA), Black College Coaches Association (BCCA), and National Association of Black Journalist NABJ.
Johnson, a Trenton, NJ native is a 1998 graduate of the University of South Carolina-Aiken (USCA) where he attained his Bachelors degree in Journalism/Communications with a concentration in Public Relations. During his college career Johnson was a gifted student-athlete as a writer for the Pacer Times newspaper and a standout baseball player. Johnson was named to the NCAA Division II Peach Belt All-Conference team in back to back seasons in 1996 and 1997. In addition, Johnson was selected as a Major League Draft Pick by the Florida Marlins organization in 1993 and 1994.
He also holds the reins of the Head Baseball Coach at the College. Just in his second year, under the direction of Coach Johnson, three Tiger Baseball Players earned a spot on the ALL-SIAC and ALL –TOURNAMENT Baseball Team.
Johnson currently resides in Columbia and is the proud parent of one daughter: Journey Makeyle Thompson.
