Benedict named Mayers Assistant Director of Athletics for Operations and Development/Senior Women's Administrator

March 1, 2007

bc_staff_mayers_verna_c01[Columbia, SC] Benedict College officials have selected Verna C. Mayers to serve as Assistant Director of Athletics for Operations and Development/ Senior Woman's Administrator (SWA) for the Benedict College Athletics Department.  Ms. Mayers will be responsible for marketing and promotions, monitoring gender equity issues, game management and development.  She began her new responsibilities this month.

Mayers is a graduate of Limestone College, where she earned dual bachelor's degrees in Business Administration (Management) and Management Information Systems. Ms. Mayers is also a certified Grant Writer, Reviewer and Administrator. She has served as the Operations Officer/Grant Writer for the Athletics Department at Benedict for the last three years. Her primary responsibilities included operations management as well as grant writing and administration.

Funding for the assistant director of athletics position comes, in part, from a grant Benedict College has received from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Strategic Alliance Matching Grant Enhancement Program.  The grant sponsored the hiring of the assistant director of athletics for operations and development/senior women's administrator in a matching program that will provide 75% salary and benefits the first year, 50% the second, and 25% the third.  Benedict will be called on to provide the balance in those years and to fund the position fully in years four and five.  Benedict College was one of only five schools selected to receive funding.

The NCAA program funding the grant has made it a priority to enhance the ethnic and gender representation in all facets of Division II athletics administration, and in the award letter, mentioned that the selection committee felt that Benedict College, as evident through the grant proposal, had demonstrated a commitment to that priority as well.

Benedict College is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II and an official member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAC). For more information contact the Office of Sports Information at (803) 705-4535.
