Columbia, SC -- December 2, 2008 -- The Benedict College Concert Choir will present its annual Christmas Concert at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 7, 2008 in the Antisdel Chapel.

This year's concert will again feature a variety of musical styles. The program includes William Dawson's Behold the Star; Glenn L. Jones' Good News, the Savior is Born; Keresimesi Qdun Deo (Christmas is Here), a Nigerian song arranged by the late Wendell Whalum; Make a Joyful Noise by Reginald Nathaniel Parker; Anita Watkins-Steven's Fairest Lord Jesus; and Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus" from Messiah. True to tradition, the concert will pay tribute to our men and women in our country's Armed Forces.
The featured "FRIENDS" of the choir will be the Lewis Greenview Elementary School Chorus directed by Richelle Glenn, a 2008 Music Education Benedict graduate; the Keenan High School Jazz Combo directed by Mr. Willie Lyles; our own Dr. Ronald H. High, organist and pianist; and Dr. Richard Beckford, organist and choral director at South Carolina State University.
During the event, the student recipient of the James E. Pope Scholarship will be announced. This scholarship is named in honor of the late James E. Pope, highly respected trumpeter and music educator in Richland One.
Tickets for the concert will go on sale at the Ponder Fine Arts Gallery beginning Monday, December 1st through Friday, December 5th between the hours of 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for students. The Benedict College Concert Choir is recognized for its stylistic diversity and originality ranging from anthems, African-American spirituals, and classical gospel, Broadway and popular tunes, and to opera excerpts. Credits include performances with poet Maya Angelou, country singer Randy Travis, pop artist Michael Bolton, actor/singer Clifton Davis, gospel recording artist, BeBe Winans, and the South Carolina Philharmonic.
