Academic Success Workshops (ASW)
Academic Success Workshops (ASW) consist of seven (7) educational sessions that provide strategies to improve academic performance. Topics are:
Session 1: Why Am I Here? (Pre-test)
January 24, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. This session serves two purposes: (1) to have students ask themselves to delve deeply to answer this question as realistically as possible, taking into account the amount of time needed and the cost (emotional and financial) they will incur to obtain their college degree and (2) to inform students of the campus support services available to them. Students will be asked to complete a "pre-test" to assess their knowledge/awareness of issues associated with the Academic Success Workshop topics.
Session 2: Goal Setting & Motivation
January 31, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. Using the SMART Goal Setting method, this session provides methods to establish and achieve attainable, measurable goals. (Handouts include a "Goal Setting for the College Student" worksheet)
Session 3: Time Management
February 7, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. Students learn how to develop a time management schedule that encompasses long-range, intermediate, and short term schedules. (Handouts include a weekly time-management calendar)
Session 4: Study Skills/Note Taking
February 21, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. This session covers methods to improve reading (SQ3R method), listening, note-taking, writing, and memory skills. This session will include a study skills checklist, handouts and guidelines for effective note-taking.
Session 5: Test-Taking Skills
February 28, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. Students are given an overview of the different kinds of tests and strategies for taking them. The handout is an outline of the types of tests and tips for performing successfully.
Session 6: Active Learning
April 3, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. Students are given an overview of Active Learning. The handout willoutline several techniques that can be used to challenge students to move beyond memorization to higher levels of understanding. They include improved critical thinking skills, increased retention and transfer of new information, increased motivation, and improved interpersonal skills.
Session 7: Problem Solving/Critical Thinking
April 10, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. Critical thinking standards govern the transformation of casual thinking into critical thinking. Many students run into situations/problems that they can not solve. This session will expose students to rational techniques that will enhance their current thinking ability. This will empower the students personally to become more effective and rational in solving their problems.
Session 8: Test-Taking Skills Review
April 17, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. Students are given an overview of the different kinds of tests and strategies for taking them. The handout is an outline of the types of tests and tips for performing successfully.
Session 9: Post Test
April 24, 2008 at 11:00 a.m.
