Campus Police Department

Reporting of Crimes or Emergency Situations

Prevention of crime on our campus is a joint responsibility of Benedict College's Campus Police Department and members of the college community. Public apathy is the criminal's greatest ally.

You cannot assume that someone else has reported criminal activity, therefore, it is important that all crimes and emergencies occurring on the campus or involving members of the Benedict community be reported immediately to the Campus Police personnel. Timely reports will be made to the administration on crimes such as murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, and/or acts considered to be a threat to other students and employees.

You may contact Campus Police by calling ext. 5400. This number is active only from on-campus telephones. When off campus, dial (803) 253-5400. When reporting criminal activities or other emergency situations, please provide the following information:

  1. Your name
  2. The location of the incident you are reporting.
  3. A description of the scene and any suspects.
  4. A description of any vehicle including license plate numbers.

Upon observing or responding to reports of criminal or disruptive behaviors, Campus Police personnel will take appropriate action which may include detaining or arresting suspects, completing incident reports and/or Benedict College administrative action reports, performing preliminary and follow-up investigations and bringing criminal or administrative charges. As a safety measure, all outside doors of dormitories are locked during the hours of 9:00 p. m. to 9:00 a.m. weekdays. On weekends, outside doors stay locked. Resident students are issued keys to their dorms. Each dormitory is staffed by a dormitory director and residential hall advisors. Students entering dormitories will be subject to having their identification cards checked and all guests will be required to sign in and to identify the student(s) whom they are visiting.

Students who are locked out of their rooms may contact their respective dormitory director or security personnel and after properly identifying themselves, may gain entry.
