School-to-Work Programs

School-to-Work  Programs

The School-to-Work Programs are sponsored by the South Carolina Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration.  The program is implemented by the Office of Institutional Scholarships at Benedict College.  

The goal of these programs is to enhance employment opportunities for high school and college students in the transportation industry.  The objectives of the programs are to address work ethics, leadership skill, and career opportunities. 

School to Work Transportation Careers Training Program

The School to Work Transportation Careers Training Program is an eight-week program sponsored by the South Carolina Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration.  The program is implemented by the Office of Institutional Scholarships at Benedict College.

The goal of the program is to enhance employment opportunities for socio-economically disadvantaged high school and college students in eh transportation industry.  The objectives of the program are to address work ethics, leadership skills, and career opportunities. 

The program SCHOOL TO WORK TRANSPORTATION CAREERS TRAINING PROGRAM STARTS June 09, 2008 AND ENDS August 01, 2008. 

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Participant must be in high school or college
  • Participant must be 16 years of age or older
  • Participant must have an overall grade point average of 2.5 or better

School-to-Work Internship Program

  • The Historically Black Colleges and Universities School-to-Work Internship Program will include a 10-week internship for ten (10) students: seven (7) undergraduate and (3) three graduate students.  The graduate students will be selected from Claflin and South Carolina State Universities.  Interns will work and research along side the leaders and managers of transportation agencies.  Research topics must be transportation related and reflect current topics in the transportation industry.
    REQUIREMENTS
  • In order to apply, students must meet the following criteria:
  • • Be a rising sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student majoring in a transportation related field, in good academic standing (3.0 GPA or better).
    • Be recommended by a professor and/or counselor.  Two (2) letters of recommendation must be submitted on official letterhead, dated, and signed. 
    • Applicants must write a one-page essay on his or her transportation interest.  The essay must be written on a level that is expected of a college student.  Essays will be weighed at 50% of the selection criteria rating.
  • The internship begins annually about May 12 and ends approximately July 20.
