[Columbia, SC] Dr. Bernard E. Anderson will speak to approximately 280 graduates at the 2002 commencement on Saturday, May 11 at 11:00 a.m. in the Benjamin E. Mays Human Resource Center Arena at Benedict College. Dr. Anderson is a Renowned Economist and former Assistant Secretary of Labor for the Employment Standards Administrations which includes the Wage and Hour Division, the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs, the Office of Workers' Compensation Programs, and the Office of Labor Management Standards and Assistant Secretary for the U.S. Department of Labor. While serving as Assistant Secretary, Dr. Anderson has strengthened the enforcement of worker protection policies through the agency reinvention initiatives, compliance assistance, and outreach to program constituencies. The Employment Standards Administration leads the Labor Department's campaign against garment sweatshops, child labor violations, migrant workers abuse, and employment discrimination. Dr. Anderson received a Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania, a Masters at Michigan State University, and an Associates degree from Livingstone College. He is a recipient of the honorary Doctorates from Shaw University and Livingstone College. He has also been inducted into the Who's Who in Finance and Industry since 1972 and Who's Who Among Black Americans since 1988. He has also been awarded the Bayard Rustin Humanitarian Award, conferred by the A. Philip Randolph Institute, in 1998, the Robert Morris Citizenship Award, conferred by the Valley Forge Chapter, Boy Scouts of America 1988, and the Award of Merit by Delaware Housing Authority in 1988. Dr. Anderson has also authored six books and numerous articles on economic employment and policy, and was a member of the Black Enterprise Board of Economists. Currently, Dr. Anderson serves on the Board of Directors for Overseas Private Investment Corporation. |
