Sensational,
Superfast, and Powerful - - these are some of the superlatives used
by Benedict College football fans to describe Leroy Christopher ‘‘Bud''
Huff a standout varsity player from 1950 to 1953.
Huff was one of
the most prolific athletes, ever to wear The Tigers' purple and gold
uniform. He performed brilliantly as a defensive halfback in 1950
and 1952, and was a feared punt returner. In 1952 and 1953 he became
the team's premier running back, displaying high - octane speed and
the ability to score from anywhere on the field.
“Bud” a 6-2, 200
pounder from Chester, was the “go to” guy on Benedict's awesome offensive
unit which comprised all-time greats Robed Donald, quarterback and
blocking back; Elwood Davis, halfback; Nathaniel “Slick” Hartman,
end; and Nathaniel Drisker, guard.
Running
off tackle, Huff would escape traffic at the line the turn on his
sprinter speed to beat everyone up to the sideline and into the end
zone. Such exploits earned cheers from the Benedict faithful as well
as berths on All-SIAC teams and honorable mention All-America selection
by sportswriters of the Pittsburgh Courier newspaper.
Leroy Huff graduated
with the Class of 1954 and coached two state championship football
teams at Sims High in Union before moving to Washington DC where
he resides. |
