Joy Holman ‘78
Basketball-Softball-Volleyball 1975-78
Throughout her life Joy Holman has excelled in every kind of sport
that requires a round ball. She starred in basketball, softball and
volleyball at Lexington High School and Benedict College, and was a
member of one of the inaugural teams of the Woman’s Professional Basketball
League.
A 5-2 playmaking guard for the Benedict College Tigerettes basketball
team from 1974 to 1977, Holman averaged 15 points per game; was MVP
during her freshmen and senior years; served as captain as a junior
and senior; led the team in assists and steals each year; was selected
to the All-Conference Team; and was the first Benedict College player
named to the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for “Women (AIAW)
All-State Basketball Team. After graduating, she played with the Dayton
Rockettes of Women’s Pro Basketball League for the three years that
the league existed.
In softball, Joy Holman was a three-year starter, in the outfield;
led the Tigerettes in home runs and stolen bases; was captain and MVP
as a senior; and was the first Benedict female to receive SCAIAW honors
for softball. In volleyball, she was captain as a junior on the team
that ranked 9th in the nation; served as captain
and was MVP during her senior year.
Joy still loves a good ball game. She plays with the Valley Girls
basketball team at Columbia’s King Park and with Ebony Ladies city
recreational softball team. Her latest athletic accomplishment is
coaching the Double Dutch Forces, an internationally-famous jump rope
team at Martin Luther King Park in Columbia. The team has won 56 world
titles, 45 second place world titles, and 167 state titles.
Joy Holman presently teaches physical education at Busbee Elementary
