Two words sum up Dennis Wilds' performance
on the gridiron at Benedict College: Scholar/Athlete.
From
1945 to 49, Dennis excelled in doing class assignments and in carrying
out blocking assignments on the football field. He played under Coach
Reuben Turner and was a two-way starter for four seasons – performing
at left end as a freshman and sophomore, and right guard his junior
and senior years. He was a pillar in BC lines that included Hall of
Famers Willis “Hoss” Bracy, Douglas Sweeper, Joseph Ritchie, and Leslye
Stallworth.
Wilds established a reputation as in athletic with great talent and
dignity, and as one more interested in team success than reaping individual
honors. At left end, he was strong against the run on defense and an
effective blocker on offense. At right guard, he used excellent agility
to dominate at the point of attack, helping to open holes legendary
Benedict halfbacks Evans Gilmore and Henry Isaac.
A highlight of Dennis' football career was his selection to the All
- Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) team.
After graduating, Wilds entered the teaching profession and became
an elementary and high school principal in Augusta. Georgia. Ho has
received many honors and awards for his contributions to education. |
