Gary E. Bell - - Allen Benedict Court 1946-55
At the time of induction, Gary Bell was employed with the S.C. Department of Social Services as the Deputy Director for Fiscal and Information Resource Management. Bell received Master’s degrees from Kent State University and Winthrop University. For five years he worked as a certified public accountant in the Charlotte, Columbia, and Atlanta offices of Arthur Andersen, the international accounting firm. He lives by the motto: treat others the way you want to be treated.

Bishop Frederick C. James - - Allen Benedict Court 1945-49
Bishop Frederick James attended Allen University where he earned a B.A. in History and English, and Howard University, where he earned his Master’s in Divinity. Although James has pastored churches in Irmo, Columbia, Winnsboro, and Sumter, South Carolina, his influence has extended far outside the state border. James was elected a Bishop of the AME church in 1972 and assigned to South Africa for four years. During this time, he was the Bishop of six countries in South Africa. In 1976, he returned to the states and was made Bishop of the AME churches in Arkansas and Oklahoma where he served for eight years. From 1984 until 1992, James served as Bishop of the South Carolina AME churches and as Chair of the Board of Allen University. During his chairmanship, Allen University was accredited for the first time. In 1993, James was made Bishop of the Second Episcopal District where he served until his retirement in 1996.

David B. Whaley, Jr. - - Saxon Homes 1952-66
At the time of his induction in 1994, David Whaley, Jr. was the Chair of the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department at Benedict College. An Honors graduate of Allen University, Whaley went on to receive his Ph.D. from Clemson University. He has devoted much of his time to developing and directing educational, recreational and cultural activities for the citizens of Richland County. For his work he was honored with the “Outstanding Leadership in Recreation and Service Award” from the S.C. Recreation & Parks Society. Today Dr. Whaley is Senior Vice President of Student Affairs at Benedict College where he applies his years of experience to campus and community life programs that ensure students receive a quality education not just inside, but also outside and alongside the college classroom.
