|
|
Minority Access to Higher Education is a project designed to improve the overall academic performance of undeserved Minority students through the use of telecommunications technology. Education, Culture, Lifelong Learning and Community Networking will serve as the primary and secondary application areas.
ANTISDEL CHAPEL
To improve the academic performance of Minority students, Benedict College has formed partnerships with school districts in Aiken, Richland and Bamberg counties. Through the use of telecommunications network, Benedict College has developed an interactive program for students, parents, and other members of the community. Minority Access to Higher Education will implement two program activities: 1) an After School Tutorial Program, and 2) Saturday workshops for both parents and students.
Some specific objectives of the project are to:
- Strengthen academic sills for middle and secondary students
- Provide a forum for students to explore math based careers
- Encourage parental and community involvement in education, culture, and lifelong learning
- Expose students, parents, and other in the community to the Internet and other electronic communications systems.
ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES AND POTENTIAL IMPACTS
This project seeks the following three primary outcomes: (1) an increase in standardized test scores; (2) an increase in overall academic performance; and (3) an increase between pre-and post-test performance on a specialized exam for participants in the program. We anticipate that students from this program will go on to college at higher rates than their peers. Also, we expect more students to choose careers in math and science than their peers do. Minority Access to Higher Education will motivate students to learn, fine tune their academic capabilities, and increase self-esteem. This project also seeks to enable parents and the community to become a part of their childrens educational process. Furthermore, the community will benefit by having a computer center whereby they will have access to the Internet and Benedict College. This project will give participants, parents, and the community access to information. |
