Suggested time limit: 2 hours (Most of the workshops can be extended to four hours to provide more in-depth knowledge and application of concepts). Additionally, one-day or multiple day seminars are available.
1. Teaching Standard English Proficiency to African American Language Speakers
This session will provide an overview of African American language and strategies for teaching Standard English proficiency. Video clips and song lyrics are integrated in the presentation as well as application of concepts (pre-K 12).
2. Culturally Relevant Pedagogy in Action
Participants will learn how to implement culturally relevant pedagogy in classroom settings. Vignettes, sample activities, and resources will be shared. Model teachers elementary, middle, and/or high school levels--are also available to do workshops. (pre-K 12).
3. Meeting Curriculum Standards With Culturally Relevant Pedagogy
A discussion and demonstration of culturally relevant pedagogy and strategies for meeting curriculum standards. Emphasis is on the need to provide culturally relevant pedagogy for all students (pre-K 12).
4. Instructional Insights, Considerations and Strategies for Teaching Students of Color and Students of Poverty
This session shares different adaptive learning strategies used by children from non-mainstream background groups and educational implications (pre-K 12).
5. Developing Multicultural Book Collections
Guidelines for developing book collections that address many aspects of diversity (e.g., ethnicity, gender, religion, social class, disabilities). Participants will have a chance to examine and apply critical literacy strategies. (pre-K 12).
6. Facilitating the Use of Cultural Relevant Pedagogy for Teacher Educators
This workshop is designed to help teacher educators find creative and innovative ways of encouraging new teachers or teachers not familiar with the research to use CRP.
7. Does Culture Matter? Exploring Cultural Awareness
Where does your cultural awareness come from? How does your own cultural background affect your interaction with students? How do you develop a healthy cultural awareness? This workshop is designed to impact how teachers and teacher educators deal with cultural dynamics in the classroom.
8. Parent Workshop
Hands-on workshop for parents/ caregivers to learn how to implement culturally relevant activities at home and in the daily lives of your school aged children.
9. High Achievement For African American Students
This workshop focuses on strategies for reversing negative achievement trends for African American students and making high achievement the norm.
10. Hip-Hop Pedagogy: Engaging the Intellectual Imagination of Our Youth
Hands-on workshop designed to help teachers, teacher educators and caregivers understand and use Hip-Hop as an effective tool to engage our youth and to help them to succeed.
11. Differentiated Instruction-George Johnson
This workshop focuses on understanding students' varying background knowledge, readiness, language, preferences in learning, interests, and to react responsively. Strategies for maximizing each student's growth and success are shared.
12. Classroom Management For Difficult Students--George Johnson
This session places disciplinary problems within a cultural context. Helps teachers consider and reframe behavioral problems and provides key strategies for prevention of discipline problems.
13. What It Takes To Improve PACT Scores for Low-Achieving Students
An overview of the research, and factors involved in reversing negative achievement plans. Model programs and strategies used by schools that have bee successful in reversing trends will be shared.
14. Reclaiming the Teaching Profession: An Action Agenda for Change
Presenting demographics about the numbers of teachers in the U.S. and the world, this motivational workshop seeks to help teachers reclaim their profession and to feel revitalized in their classrooms. Case studies of teachers who love teaching are shared.
15. The State of Black South Carolina in Education
An overview of student performance trends, funding issues, teacher demographics, and issues faced by African American students in South Carolina's schools
