Classrooms Modeling Culturally Relevant Pedagogy

Nine teachers (3 elementary, two middle, and four high schools) are modeling culturally appropriate pedagogy in their classrooms.  All bring a strong commitment to effective teaching of African American students and have read Gloria Ladson-Billings The Dreamkeepers: Successful Teachers of African American Students. Also, teachers engage in ongoing reading of relevant articles and participate in CEEEAAS roundtable discussions. Each teacher works with a Benedict College faculty member. All of the teachers visited or will visit  schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District to observe the "English for Your Success Program" to learn more about teaching Standard English proficiency to African American students.

Teachers, administrators, and teacher educators who are interested in implementing or observing culturally relevant pedagogy may arrange to visit the classrooms.   Please call  Dr. Gloria Boutte(803) 705-4351 for more information or to arrange a visit.  Related photos can be seen in the Photo gallery and under the Powerpoint presentations link.
