Class objectives

At the completion of this course, students should understand the technical application of managerial accounting.  Students should understand how managers use accounting information to make business decisions, including those involving planning and controlling operations.

Students should complete the course with a strong knowledge of budgeting, cost systems, analysis of financial data, and other planning and control tools.   Critical analysis, and written communication skills will be honed with the completion of various written case studies and financial summaries, which will be included in the homework. Ethical issues confronting internal accountants will also be discussed.  Students should expect to complete extensive homework assignments.

Weekly group assignments and group discussions will ensure that the student is capable of working in a group setting.  The class participation grade component will assess the level of engagement that the student exhibited during these exercises.

Class expectations

Homework

Ms. Booth-Bell has a favorite motto, “Accounting is not HARD, it is just HARD WORK”.  This means you do not have to be the smartest student in the class to get an A, just the student that is diligent and does his or her work.  Therefore to be successful in this class you MUST complete homework assignments.  Each chapter homework assignment will take approximately 2-4 hours to complete, but your reward will be a through understanding of the subject, and a favorable grade in the class.  You are welcome to work in small groups, and turn in homework assignments as a group; however, it is each student’s personal responsibility to make sure they understand the group homework submitted.

Attendance

Students are expected to attend every class and arrive promptly, as class participation is an important requirement for success in this class.  The official Benedict College attendance policy will be observed in this class.

Timely Submission of Assignments

All assignments must be turned in on time.   Homework assignments will not be accepted after the due date.  Testing will be completed in the time assigned.  Any student who misses a test will receive a grade of “0” for that test missed, unless an official Benedict College excuse is presented to Ms. Booth-Bell.  Arrangements for the test missed must be made with Ms. Booth-Bell as soon as possible, or at the latest, as soon as the student returns to campus.

Expectations for your Instructor

Mrs. Booth-Bell will review all homework assignments in class after they are submitted.  This will allow the student to attempt the problem first, and to encourage students to review the material before it is covered in class.  Mrs. Booth-Bell will hold a review session before a scheduled examination.  This review session is not an attempt to re-teach the entire body of material, but to give the student an outline of important points to focus on for the examination.

Mrs. Booth-Bell does keep office hours as presented on the syllabus, and as posted on her door. If she will not be available for a scheduled office hour, she will try to alert students at least the class period prior to the scheduled office hours.  For unforeseen cancellation of office hours, a note will be posted on the door of office 207 Duckette Hall.  If you are unable to seek help during office hours, please see Ms. Booth-Bell to make an appointment at another time.
