The Fine Arts Department seeks to provide students with a broad knowledge of and appreciation for the arts, and to prepare students for careers and further study. The Department is composed of four (4) areas: Visual Art, Dance, Music, and Theatre.The curricula are designed to provide general education courses in support of a strong liberal arts education. The majors in the Department are Studio Art, Teaching of Art, Music Education and General Music. The Teaching Programs require the passing of PRAXIS I by the end of the sophomore year, PRAXIS II in the senior year, ED 460S Student Teaching and a minimum 2.50 GPA. Students may also obtain a minor in the Art and Music areas by following specified programs of study. (Reference the Education Department for additional guidelines of all Teaching Programs.)
The Mission of the Department is to provide instructional programs in the arts which stimulate intellectual activity and exploration of personal and professional artistic expression, humanistic study, enduring values and ethical positions, critical analysis, dialogue and inquiry, and an understanding and appreciation for the fine arts as tools for social change.
Professional Certification
Students who choose the teaching option in Art and Music follow an approved program of study which meets require-ments for professional education and/or certification by the South Carolina State Department of Education. (see also section under Teacher Education Program).
