English and Foreign Languages

The English and Foreign Languages area also offers courses in French and Spanish to meet the General Education foreign language requirement.

The English and Foreign Languages Department provides learning opportunities and experiences to:

  1. assist students in improving the basic skills of communication-reading, writing,critical thinking, speaking, and listening;
  2. enable students to develop techniques of intrapersonal and interpersonal communication for special audiences and purposes;
  3. develop students' ability to communicate clearly and logically, utilizing skills in analysis and research;
  4. familiarize students with a representative body of western and non-western literature from major literary periods: classical, ancient, and contemporary;
  5. develop students' ability to relate to the major genres of literature;
  6. develop students' appreciation for the language, literature, and culture of peopleof other lands;
  7. enable students to acquire knowledge and skills for teaching kindergartenthrough secondary schools and adult education;
  8. develop students' basic knowledge for graduate training and other professionalendeavors;
  9. help students to acquire knowledge and strategies in the learning of language andliterature through the use of modern technological resources in language and literature learning; and
  10. enable students to develop and to attain proficiency in understanding, speaking,reading, and writing in the French and Spanish languages.

The competencies for English majors are to develop and demonstrate proficiency in:

  1. verbal and written communication skills needed for employment in English and avariety of related career choices;
  2. research inquiry skills needed for augumentative and analytical writing, as well astechniques of basic research paper writing,
  3. analysis of a variety of selections from literary genres such as poetry, drama, fiction, print and non-print texts;
  4. application of insights offered by applied linguists;
  5. use of basic to advanced skills in French or Spanish language to communicatewith speakers of another language;
  6. knowledge base and skill applications for future teachers; and
  7. processes of language theory, computer integration techniques, and field applications that ensure readiness for graduate school and /or a career.
