Academic & Outreach Programs
STUDY CIRCLE: To assist Benedict College students in embracing the concept of team study and to foster collegiality, selected Honors Scholars are assigned by major to serve as coordinators for STUDY CIRCLES in the Freshmen & Sophomore Seminar Classes. The ultimate goal is to create a community of scholarship that teaches the importance of intellectual interdependence.
PROJECT REACH: As a partner with the Office of Service Learning and Residential Life, Honors Scholars serve as tutors and computer center facilitators from 6:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and weekends at variable times at all residential facilities. PROJECT REACH CENTERS will be established at Bacoats Apartments, Gambrell Hall, Goodson Hall, Stuart Hall, Mini-Dorm, Jenkins Hall, Mather Hall, Oak Street, Haskell Street, English Meadows, and Paddock Apartments.
PROJECT REACH HOTLINE: Tutoring Assistance in Math and English for Benedict College students and Richland School District One students. Electronic Mail and Telephonic assistance available from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and weekends at variable times.
FRESHMEN UNITED: To assist Richland School District One Students in embracing the concept of team study and to foster collegiality, Benedict College Freshmen Honors Scholars will be matched with Freshmen from C. A. Johnson Academy for Study Circles and mentorship. The ultimate goal is to create a community of scholarship that teaches the importance of intellectual interdependence at the pre-collegiate level. Freshmen United will be facilitated through ENG 135H and ENG 137H as Service Learning Courses.
BC AFTERSCHOOL & SATURDAY ACADEMY: Provision of tutors and mentors for W.A. Perry Middle School and C.A. Johnson Academy for after school and Saturday sessions. This program is a part of the Benedict College and Richland One Partnership for improving community education.
IN THE SPIRIT: Honors Scholars serve as leaders in prayer and worship, while encouraging their colleagues throughout campus to participate in Campus Ministries, such as, Chapel Services, Dimension in Meanings, and to participate in Community Ministries. These Scholars will conduct a monthly prayer, worship and/or spiritual activity in all residential facilities, including Bacoats Apartments, Gambrell Hall, Goodson Hall, Stuart Hall, Mini-Dorm, Jenkins Hall, Mather Hall, Oak Street, Haskell Street, English Meadows, and Paddock Apartments. Also, these Scholars will serve as ad hoc committee members on the Religious Life Committee under the advisement of the Campus Minister.
"MY BROTHERS' AND SISTERS' KEEPER" PROGRAM: Under the direction of professional counselors, faculty and staff, a selected team of student facilitators meet monthly to host a program at Bacoats Apartments, Gambrell Hall, Goodson Hall, Stuart Hall, Mini-Dorm, Jenkins Hall, Mather Hall, Oak Street, Haskell Street, English Meadows, and Paddock Apartments which engages students in the critical dialectic facing Benedict College students.
WEEKLY ROUNDTABLE: In association with Student Support Services and under the coordination of the Residential Hall Assistants, Honors Scholars meet for mandatory small seminars to discuss pertinent academic and social issues impacting their lives at Benedict College, in the local community and state, and in the world. The constant inquiry under discussion will be, "What can I do to make Benedict College, the community, and the World a better place?"
DEAN'S CIRCLE: In partnership with Student Leadership Development and the Academic Council, Selected Scholars and Leaders of Student Organizations meet monthly with the College Deans to plan, implement and evaluate academic initiatives for Benedict College.
GOVERNMENTAL AWARENESS: Selected Scholars and Student Leaders work in partnership for action on political issues under the guidance of the Office of Governmental Relations.
