REC 230 Introduction to Recreation and Leisure Services credit 3 hrs. As an introductory course in recreation and leisure services, emphasis is placed on the history, concepts, principles, and philosophical rationale of the recreation movement. Types of recreation sponsorship are analyzed, and a detailed investigation is made into the function of governmental levels in recreation. Future implications for recreation as a profession are analyzed in light of current trends. REC 232 Recreation Program Planning credit 3 hrs. Methods of program planning, publicity, and scheduling are covered; and utilization of time blocks and facilities are incorporated. Students identify the different recreation program areas, write program objectives that are utilized in the implementation process, conduct pre- and post-evaluations of community resources, and design a program of activities for a selected population. REC 310 Recreation Volunteer Services credit 1 hr. The purpose of this course is to give students an opportunity to gain practical experiences and to assist students in making decisions concerning the types of populations they are interested in serving. Each student is required to complete one voluntary experience consisting of forty-two (42) hours. REC 320 Recreation Special Topics credit 2 hrs. An elective designed to help students majoring in Recreation and Leisure Services gain more flexibility and options regarding the range of topics covered in their areas of specialization. REC 330 Administration & Management of Recreation Areas & Facilities credit 3 hrs. This course is designed to provide students with the basic understanding of the principles and procedures related to planning, development, design, and maintenance or recreation, park resources, and leisure service areas and facilities. REC 331 Leadership and Group Processes in Recreation credit 3 hrs. A study of the dynamics and processes of leadership are explored, including the role of leadership in recreation; duties, responsibilities, and techniques of leadership; and various styles of communication and their probable consequences. An honors section is offered. REC 332 Legal Aspects in Recreation and Leisure Services credit 3 hrs. This course is designed to provide students with basic understanding of legal liability, the risk management process, negligence, intentional torts, constitutional torts, strict liability, standard of care, attractive nuisance and other legal subjects. Personal and contract law is also examined. REC 333 Clinical Practice in Therapeutic Recreation credit 3 hrs. This course will include theoretically sound and effective interventions, understanding of social/clinical psychological concepts related to leader transactions with clients in therapeutic recreation. REC 334 Introduction to Therapeutic Recreation credit 3 hrs. A comprehensive study of the role of therapeutic recreation and health care delivery systems. Legislative, agency, governmental, and professional issues are investigated. Medical terminology is included. REC 336 Community Leisure Services credit 3 hrs. A study of the issues and principles of public, private, and industrial leisure service agencies. Methods of problem solving, planning, organizing, supervising, and conducting a recreation program of activities at these levels are explored. REC 338 Outdoor Adventure Education credit 3 hrs. This course covers the philosophy of Outdoor Adventure Education by examining the practical organizational and instructional skills needed for outdoor leadership. The psychosocial impact that the outdoor environment has on individuals will be covered. REC 430 Facilitation and Intervention Techniques in Therapeutic Recreation credit 3 hrs. The course involves acquiring skills and techniques in the dynamics of human communication in therapeutic groups and individual counseling sessions. REC 435 Therapeutic Recreation Process credit 3 hrs. A comprehensive study of the therapeutic recreation process as a part of rehabilitative services. Group and individual assessments, treatment plans, intervention techniques, and documentation techniques are covered. REC 437 Organization and Management of Recreation and Leisure Services credit 3 hrs. This course is designed to study the organization and management of park and recreation services, governmental functions, organizational structures, policies, and personnel responsibilities. Aspects of financing, public relations, decision-making, and business practices are analyzed. The use of computers to facilitate administrative functions is also explored. REC 440 Recreation Field Work credit 12 hrs. A course designed to give students an opportunity to practice skills learned in the classroom and apply them to a practical setting. Under the guidance of the academic advisor and agency supervision, students are required to complete a minimum of 480 clock hours (twelve consecutive weeks) of field placement under a certified supervisor. HREC 332 Research Methods in Leisure Services and Public Health credit 3 hrs. This course includes an analysis of the principal methods of Recreation and Public Health research, the application of statistical computer packages that are applicable to Recreation and Public Health research, and the development of a Senior Research Proposal. HREC 431 Statistics in Recreation and Public Health credit 3 hrs. This course is designed to enable HPER students to improve their ability to utilize basic statistics in the organization, analysis and presentation of data to complete independent research in the fields of Recreation and Public Health. Completion of this course requires successful defense and completion of the Senior Research Paper. Senior Papers must include basic statistical methods, sampling, graphical displays of data collection and representation of data. Source: Benedict College Catalogue 2007-2009. |
