Recreation

The competencies expected of Recreation and Lesure Services major are that they will be able to:

  1. conceptualize the philosophical foundations of recreation and leisure services for all populations;
  2. explain the history and development of the leisure service profession to include professional organizations;
  3. identify and use various community, institutional, natural, cultural and human service resources to promote and enhance the leisure experience for diverse populations;
  4. develop, supervise and manage recreation and leisure service programs that meet the needs of individuals throughout the lifecycle;
  5. assess the extent to which recreation and leisure programs are meeting their goals and objectives;
  6. design, implement and evaluate diversified recreation and leisure service programs; and
  7. identify the legislative and legal processes that impact policyformation that govern certain aspects of recreation and leisure behavior.

The competencies expected of students who complete the program in recreation and leisure services are that they will be able to:

  1. identify the leisure needs, interests, abilities, and limitations of the population being served;
  2. design individual and group programs to facilitate the growth and development of the population being served;
  3. lead activities in areas of therapy, leisure education, and special recreation;
  4. evaluate client leisure participation and properly document assessments made; and
  5. understand how to work cooperatively with treatment teams members for the wellbeings of individual clients.
